What are verification documents and acceptable submission formats?

Learn about best practices regarding verification documents.

When submitting documents for identity verification, it’s important to submit only the documents requested and to submit clear, color images of each of those documents. We’ve included a section with examples of unacceptable submissions which will require us to request additional documents. We appreciate you submitting the correct documents as clear images that allow us to complete the verification process quickly.

Best practices
To submit clear, usable images, we recommend that you:

  • Use your phone to take the color photos of your documents
  • Place each document on a flat, dark surface when taking the photo
  • Include a reasonable amount of background area around each document, preventing the document from being too closely cropped
  • Photograph both sides of each two-sided document separately
  • Re-take a photo if it looks blurry to you (since that means it’ll look blurry to us too)

Bill.com does not accept identification cards issued from schools, colleges, libraries, gyms, or other institutions, organizations, or businesses. These aren't government-issued and can't be used as ID cards to verify identity.

Driver's license/State-Issued Identification Card/Passport Card

When submitting a driver’s license, you must submit color images of the front and back separately. Be sure the images are in focus and include the complete license, including the edges and corners. It’s better to include a little background than to crop too closely and risk having to submit again.

Passport

When submitting a passport, you must submit a color image of the entire passport book, open to the photo page. Be sure the image is in focus and include the full image of the passport, including the edges and corners. It’s better to include a little background than to crop too closely and risk having to submit again.

Examples of unacceptable submissions

Front-only of a two-sided ID

When submitting a two-sided document, both sides must be submitted.

Partial image of the front or the back

The entire image of the document must be submitted. Without being able to view the entire document, the document won't be accepted.

Two documents in one image

Each document must be submitted as its own image.
